Banks open earnings season as the chip trade cracks

Tuesday opens with two stories pulling in opposite directions. JPMorgan stumbled and Goldman Sachs sprinted as the big banks kicked off third-quarter earnings. Meanwhile a violent sell-off in Korean memory-chip stocks is rattling the AI trade. Wednesday's inflation report is the bigger test.

JPMorgan misses, Goldman impresses

Seoul sells off, chips follow

South Korea's KOSPI fell more than 5% as Samsung dropped 7.39% and SK Hynix's US-listed shares lost 5.66%, after China's CXMT announced a more efficient memory design. Nasdaq-100 futures were down about 0.8%.

The AI bill comes into focus

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan called AI investing "a casino" and said access to capital could become a bigger bottleneck than chips or power. Michael Burry warned the market may be setting up a "bull trap."

Inflation is the main event

September CPI lands Wednesday. Economists expect a 0.6% monthly rise and a 0.2% gain in core prices. The 10-year yield sits near 5.22%, and the Fed meets again on Oct. 27-28 after last month's rate hike.

Sentiment has thawed

CNN's Fear & Greed Index reads 45, Neutral, and money-market funds just took in $166.4 billion in a week, the most since April 2020. Cash is piling up on the sidelines even as stocks hold near records.
